Library 2.0 perspectives

I looked at 3 pespectives on Library 2.0 - Below are the pieces I found particularly relevant:

1. Into a new world of librarianship
Librarian 2.0 gets content: This librarian understands that the future of libraries will be guided by how users access, consume and create content.AND Librarian 2.0 embraces Web 2.0 tools. These are essential elements so that libraries do not become obsolete to users

2. To better bibliographic services
Another part of not becoming obsolete - by making more metadata accessible more resources will be able to be used. RDA helps to do this by clustering results that are interesting to students.

3. To a temporary place in time
I found this section interesting "What are libraries? Libraries are not just collections of documents and books, they are conversations, they are convocations of people, ideas, and artifacts in dynamic exchange. Libraries are not merely in communities, they are communities: they preserve and promote community memories; they provide mentors not only for the exploration of stored memory, but also for the creation of new artifacts of memory."

This post is merely an excuse to talk about my car again....

Well as you all know I love my new car. Here is an image of the car, that thanks to the magic of computers (http://sporkforge.com/imaging/c_drawing.php) is now a piece of art. Her tentative name is Dory, because she looks a little like the little fish from Nemo - but I am open to suggestions.

This Blog: librarians do gaga

This Blog: librarians do gaga

Thanks Robert, I love Lady Gaga

Technorati

An interesting way to see what other blog posts have been written on your topic of interest, or to see how your blog can be different

Delicious

A great idea to bookmark all your favourite sites in one place. Allows you to see what other websites may be of interest to you that other users have tagged with the same words.

Easy to use.

Web 2.0 technology at UON

I think the library could make greater use of Web 2.0 technologies, such as RSS feeds. If the new book list was available via an RSS feed, academics and students could automatically be notified when a new list is created. Also you could add new titles to a Library account on LibraryThing, that other LibraryThing members could be notified of.
If we do not keep up to date with the new technologies, students will lose a sense of trust in the services we provide and we will develop the image of a bunch of old fogies.

Library Thing

Library Thing could be a beneficial way to find other books you are interested in reading.
If you view a books record, you are able to see:
  • Who else has read it
  • What they like to read
  • Discussions on the topic
  • Reviews of the book
etc. etc. etc.

Gotta love Oprah

Did anyone ever wish they were Oprah in the 90s? Now if only there was a Ricki Lake image generator

RSS Feeds

RSS feeds are a great way of keeping track of updates on various websites without wasting hours searching each site individually.

I looked at the discovery tools provided in the activity but think that I prefer to link to the RSS Feed of a website if I find I am regularly visiting it, as opposed to just randomly searching for sites I may be interested in to link to.

Technology

Technology is a fabulous thing when you know how to use it properly. Sometimes it feels like hours can be wasted trying to find out how to complete a new task - or just exploring what that technology has to offer.

As long as technology does not eliminate human interaction it is a positive thing. I think sites like Facebook are great as it allows me to keep up to date with what friends are doing in a small amount of time. There are dangers associated with these sites, but if used sensibly I don't think its a bad thing.

What am I?

Digital Photo Task.

All these photos were taken around Bib Services. What are they?

P.S.  I just needed a theme so I could photograph, so they are not difficult to work out :-)

Adobe - A quick review for the sake of an Alien

Well after a long and useful day of Adobe, I have lots of tricks I can use to manipulate, merge and edit documents. Also ways to save images and create watermarks.
The lovely gentleman in the previous post shall be remembered by all (everyone is invited to the wedding). And the Alien Song which ended our happy group, is attached.
