Wiki Sandbox Experience

I left this for weeks to see if I could get access, but I still can't - so my experience is that this would be a conveniant way for people to share common ideas and experiences - however as all members are able to edit an entry a wiki would not be suitable for anything of a more secure/stable nature

Is this really the end?

What were your favourite discoveries or exercises on this learning journey?
I enjoyed using the fun mashups (e.g. spell with flickr) - and also liked finding sites that could help give direction for how these resources can be used in libraries in the future.

How has this program assisted or affected your lifelong learning goals?
I feel encouraged/interested to look at further investigation these Web2.0 tools when I have more time available.

What could we do differently to improve upon this program’s format or concept?
The main problem with the program I think were the countless broken links in the blog posts - discovery resources were frequently no longer current, and podcasts non-existant. Also some tasks were very time expensive and not always possible for participants to undertake on their own.

All in all pretty interesting :-)

Mashups

I found this great wiki where people have contributed various ideas on how Mash-ups can be used in library settings - mashedlibrary

I also love this un-library related mashup which takes images from flickr to create words Flickr Words

Roman numeral M [1000] hangman tile blue letter A letter S 3-21 H for Happy It\ U IMG_5614_3 IMG_5610_2 Boggle black letter U letter n

Podcasts

The podcast directory I used was http://www.podcastdirectory.com/category/Education there were plenty of categories to explore. I did a search for the word library and stumbled across a large number of libraries that have created podcasts as a way to explain reference techniques, library etiquette or events in the library, interviews with special guests etc. Another way to promote services to auditory learners.

You Tube

This is one of my niece and nephews favorite groups to listen to on Youtube - songs designed to make children (and adults with often childlike humour such as myself) laugh and laugh and laugh.

Please don't pee in the pool - Youtube

Youtube is good entertainment but it can be a big time waster - also people tend to put up more of their life then is really necessary to see.

Web 2.0 Awards list

Well, the first award winner application does not have any use in the Library community - but it looks fab. It is called Etsy and it is a shopping site with craft and homemade gifts.

Also some of the sites that were categorised under Niche Social Networking would be great, to prevent people feeling isolated or if they were struggling with questions e.g.:

Mothersclick - for new and expectant mothers
Tu Diabetes - Facts sheets, links, forums for diabetes sufferers
Imbee - Facebook for kids, requires authentication from parents before children can use Imbee, also allows parent to restrict what elements of the site the child can use and send parents a daily update on the childs activity on the site.

Google Documents - Drawing

https://docs.google.com/drawings/pub?id=18keBsXrgUbew9iiJq3yOgiu6XPpt0BFlNmEeIt4fGG4&w=960&h=720

Google Documents

Here is my google document - access is open to everyone, so feel free to add to it with you own favorites or traditions.

I love the idea of the Zoho project application. I have an interest in Project Management as it provides direction and structure to tasks but could never afford to buy Microsoft Project - so it looks great.

Wikis

I came across a few interesting Wikis that other libraries have used as a collaborative area.

The technical services department at the University of Limerick in Ireland, has a wiki that is used like our S: Drive, to store procedure manuals, cheat sheets. Any staff member is able to add pages so that procedural updates can be current, and not one persons, responsibility.

A Wiki may be a good idea for Bib Services to use as a way for people to record ideas for what procedures need updating, what we would like on the agenda at team meetings etc.

While searching for Wikis I stumbled across this great blog on the future of cataloguing departments/ library resources http://www.catalogingfutures.com/catalogingfutures/
Looks interesting if I ever find the time to work through it.

Library 2.0 perspectives

I looked at 3 pespectives on Library 2.0 - Below are the pieces I found particularly relevant:

1. Into a new world of librarianship
Librarian 2.0 gets content: This librarian understands that the future of libraries will be guided by how users access, consume and create content.AND Librarian 2.0 embraces Web 2.0 tools. These are essential elements so that libraries do not become obsolete to users

2. To better bibliographic services
Another part of not becoming obsolete - by making more metadata accessible more resources will be able to be used. RDA helps to do this by clustering results that are interesting to students.

3. To a temporary place in time
I found this section interesting "What are libraries? Libraries are not just collections of documents and books, they are conversations, they are convocations of people, ideas, and artifacts in dynamic exchange. Libraries are not merely in communities, they are communities: they preserve and promote community memories; they provide mentors not only for the exploration of stored memory, but also for the creation of new artifacts of memory."

This post is merely an excuse to talk about my car again....

Well as you all know I love my new car. Here is an image of the car, that thanks to the magic of computers (http://sporkforge.com/imaging/c_drawing.php) is now a piece of art. Her tentative name is Dory, because she looks a little like the little fish from Nemo - but I am open to suggestions.

Technorati

An interesting way to see what other blog posts have been written on your topic of interest, or to see how your blog can be different

Delicious

A great idea to bookmark all your favourite sites in one place. Allows you to see what other websites may be of interest to you that other users have tagged with the same words.

Easy to use.

Web 2.0 technology at UON

I think the library could make greater use of Web 2.0 technologies, such as RSS feeds. If the new book list was available via an RSS feed, academics and students could automatically be notified when a new list is created. Also you could add new titles to a Library account on LibraryThing, that other LibraryThing members could be notified of.
If we do not keep up to date with the new technologies, students will lose a sense of trust in the services we provide and we will develop the image of a bunch of old fogies.

Library Thing

http://www.librarything.com/profile/ginnyk

Library Thing could be a beneficial way to find other books you are interested in reading.
If you view a books record, you are able to see:
  • Who else has read it
  • What they like to read
  • Discussions on the topic
  • Reviews of the book
etc. etc. etc.

Gotta love Oprah

Did anyone ever wish they were Oprah in the 90s? Now if only there was a Ricki Lake image generator

RSS Feeds

RSS feeds are a great way of keeping track of updates on various websites without wasting hours searching each site individually.

I looked at the discovery tools provided in the activity but think that I prefer to link to the RSS Feed of a website if I find I am regularly visiting it, as opposed to just randomly searching for sites I may be interested in to link to.

Technology

Technology is a fabulous thing when you know how to use it properly. Sometimes it feels like hours can be wasted trying to find out how to complete a new task - or just exploring what that technology has to offer.

As long as technology does not eliminate human interaction it is a positive thing. I think sites like Facebook are great as it allows me to keep up to date with what friends are doing in a small amount of time. There are dangers associated with these sites, but if used sensibly I don't think its a bad thing.

What am I?

Digital Photo Task.

All these photos were taken around Bib Services. What are they?

P.S.  I just needed a theme so I could photograph, so they are not difficult to work out :-)

Adobe - A quick review for the sake of an Alien

Well after a long and useful day of Adobe, I have lots of tricks I can use to manipulate, merge and edit documents. Also ways to save images and create watermarks.
The lovely gentleman in the previous post shall be remembered by all (everyone is invited to the wedding). And the Alien Song which ended our happy group, is attached.

I think everyone did a FANTASTIC job on their new blogs - I have loved checking them out. Nothing for anyone to be worried about - except the fact someone might take our photo next week LOL

7.5 Habits of Lifelong Learning

If we are supposed to feel exhilarated and inspired about lifelong learning, would it not have made more sense for the narrator of the podcast to sound like she was enjoying the experience? Having said that, I love learning new things, so lifelong learning is an area that I enjoy. Wahoo :-)

Part of Thing 2 was to identify which of the 7.5 habits we found easiest and which we struggle with. So here goes:

Easiest
Habit 7 - Teach others
I enjoy being able to help someone if they are having difficulty with a task. In turn I am so grateful when I am struggling with a concept and a team mate can sit down and work through it with me (or answer the same question 5000 times - yes I still am incapable of transferring a phonecall).

Most Difficult
Habit 4 - Have confidence in yourself as a competent effective learner

"The words that you use to describe yourself will soon become your reality"

Enough said.

Week 2 - Create a blog

As per instructions for Week 2, Task 3 here is my blog. Now comes the hard bit of finding something interesting to say :-)

Anyone have any ideas? Try feeding the fish below, it helps to pass the time.
